Driver Ed Course
What is the required number of Class D motor vehicle classroom hours?
A Class D motor vehicle program must provide students under 18 with at least 30 hours of approved classroom instruction.
What if I miss a day of driver's education?
Sometimes things happen—you get sick, have an appointment, or whatever. If you miss a day, you'll just have to make that day up in rotation. We do 10 days for classroom instruction, each day specific to the curriculum, to ensure we cover every topic thoroughly. So, if you miss a day, the following day has to be completed before the blue card can be issued.
What is "virtual" class held over Zoom?
Distance learning or virtual classes are different from online learning. Online learning doesn't have an instructor present during the session. Online learning is a guided course instructor that provides support for questions or clarifications; it is self-paced. Compared to online classes over Zoom, there is a set time every day that the class will gather simultaneously. The class will be engaged in answering questions and will be virtually present at all times. Essentially, it is the same curriculum we give students who take their classes in person.
How old do I have to be to be to take driver's education?
You must be 15 to take the permit test, so you should be as close to your 15th birthday as possible. However, you can take the class at 14 and the permit test at 15.
General
Can I take the classroom instruction in one program and behind-the-wheel in another program?
Enrollment in classroom instruction and laboratory instruction does not need to occur with the same program. However, if partial instrcuction to the 6 hours BTW is done, a certificate must be given to the new driving school indicating hours already completed.
Are your instructors certified and licensed?
Yes, each of our instructors is licensed by the state of Minnesota to instruct driver education. All instructors have also undergone and passed the required background checks as mandated by the state
What requirements have to be fulfilled to earn learner's permit and driver's license?
You must be 15 years old to take the knowledge exam and get your permit in Minnesota. In addition to passing the exam, you need a blue card from a certified driver's ed program showing you completed 30 hours of classroom instruction. Once you have your permit, you must complete three two-hour behind-the-wheel lessons (6 hours). After this, you'll receive a white card certifying you completed the entire program. You can take your road exam at age 16 to get your driver's license.
When is a course completion certificate, blue-card, or letter of completion issued?
Blue cards are ONLY to be used for students who are under the age of 18. The program where the student is enrolled in behind-the-wheel training always issues the blue card. If a student completes both classroom and behind-the-wheel learning with the same program, that program will issue a blue card after the 30 hours of classroom instruction is complete.
If a student completes the 30 hours of classroom with another program or their school, then chooses to enroll in behind the wheel with another program, the authorized signer of the BTW program will issue the blue card, BUT ONLY after receiving a "letter of completion" from the program where the classroom instruction was completed. A program is not required to issue a blue card or "letter of completion" to a student who has not paid the fees agreed on in the student contract or agreement.
Students will need their blue card to take their permit test. The course completion letter from their school or other program is invalid for authorizing the knowledge test.
When is a course completion certificate (white-card) issued to the student?
When a student under 18 years of age is properly enrolled in your program and has successfully completed both classroom and BTW instruction, a course completion certificate should be issued. Typically, the white card is issued at the last behind-the-wheel lesson, and that allows for the student to take their license test once they are 16 and have had their permit for at least 6 months.
What is the differance between the blue card and white card?
Both the blue card and the white card are given to students under the age of 18 only. The blue card is needed for the student to take their permit test and is only given to the student after completing all 30 hours of classroom education as well as being enrolled in a certified BTW program. The white card is issued to the student after they have completed the 6 hours of BTW lessons and is needed to take the road test.
Behind-the-wheel
In a Class D program, how many hours of simulator instruction may be substituted for BTW?
Simulator instruction must not be substituted for more than two hours of on-street laboratory instruction (behind-the-wheel lessons-6 hours required). So, a student could do 4 hours on the driving simulator to count towards 2 of the required 6 hours for behind-the-wheel training.
How will I get to my behind-the-wheel lessons?
We will come to get you, assuming the student is within 10-15 miles of the classroom address in Apple Valley, Minnesota. We can pick you up from school and bring you back after the lesson or bring you home if the lesson ends after school hours. At registration, you'll be asked to provide the pick-up and drop-off address or state that you'll come to the classroom address. There's no additional fee for pick-up and drop-off.
How fast can I complete behind-the-wheel lessons?
This depends on your scheduling flexibility and instructor availability. You can take one 2-hour behind-the-wheel lesson each week if you are under age 18 and schedule up to 2 driving lessons in advance. You must have one week of practice at least between lessons, as well as 10-15 hours on your driving log if you have not completed the required 50 hours.
Can I use my own car?
No, our vehicles have safety features (passenger brake, passenger mirror, student driver signs, etc.) that don't come in standard cars.
Will I have other students in the car with me?
No. We do not have anyone else in the driver's ed car besides the student and the instructor. The only exception may be if a new instructor is training before they can be certified to join our team.
Can I request a specific driving instructor?
Our scheduling software lets you see all available driving lessons and who is teaching them. If your preferred instructor is open, you can select them for a lesson.
When can I start the behind-the-wheel lessons?
You can start driving lessons anytime with a valid learner permit or driver's license. We do ask that students under the age of 18 have at least 10-15 hours before they schedule their first lesson, and again between the next two lessons. You must be paid in full to schedule driving lessons. Scheduling can be done on our website on our website. If you are under 18, you must complete 30-hours of driver's ed before starting or scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons.
